Discounts are a great way to entice newcomers, reward your returning customers or offer discounted tickets to VIPs and members.
Discounts can be given to buyers in the form of codes or set up to apply automatically during checkout.
How to create a discount code
Discount codes can be created for a % or $ figure discount across one, multiple, or all of your ticket types. You can also restrict the number of times a discount code can be used per order and over its lifetime. There is no (reasonable) limit to the number of discount codes you can create.
Manage your event via the events tab
Head to promote > discounts on the left-hand menu bar
Click create discount code
Give your code a name
This is the code ticket buyers will enter during checkoutChoose whether the discount is a fixed dollar ($) amount or percentage (%)
Select the ticket types the code can apply to
Set the code usage limits
Quantity refers to how many times the code can be used in total across all orders
Maximum use per order refers to the maximum number of tickets in a single order this discount code can be used for
Set a timeframe between which the discount code is valid
Discounts apply per ticket.
For example, a 10% discount code applied to an order of 4 tickets will give a 10% discount off each ticket price. If the price of tickets varies, so does the discount.
How to create a discount that applies automatically
You can trigger an automatic discount to apply when a certain dollar value is reached or a combination of tickets is purchased. Buyers do not need to manually enter a discount code.
Head to promote > discounts on the left-hand menu bar
Click create automatic discount
There are two triggers that can be set
Value of order
What is purchased
Automatic discounts are great for seasonal promotions such as "earlybird" or "mothers day" and can also incentivise buyers to purchase more tickets
Trigger a discount when a certain order value is reached
For example: "Spend $200 to get 20% off all tickets in your order"
Select value of order
Enter a name for your discount
Set the trigger amount
Set the discount amount that will be applied per ticket
Select what tickets can be discounted
Set the quantity of the discount (how many times it can be applied overall) and the maximum use per order (how many tickets can be discounted in one order
For example: You’re offering Adult ($80), Concession ($70) and Child ($40) tickets and wish to offer $20 off the entire order if a ticket buyer spends $200. The type of tickets they select is not important.
An automatic discount is triggered at $200 for $20 off per ticket, applied to all ticket types. The maximum use per order is set to ‘1'. This means once an order reaches $200, $20 will be discounted from '1’ ticket, and therefore the whole order.
Trigger a discount when certain ticket types or number of tickets are purchased
For example: Buy any 4 tickets or more and receive 5% off each ticket
Select what is purchased
Select the ticket types and the number of those tickets that will need to be added to an order to trigger the discount
Set the discount amount that will be applied per ticket
Select what tickets can be discounted
Set the quantity of the discount (how many times it can be applied overall) and the maximum use per order (how many tickets can be discounted in one order)
For example: Buy any 4 tickets or more and receive 5% off each ticket
Under what is purchased select “All ticket types” and set the quantity to “4”
Set the discount to “5%” off per ticket and applies to “All ticket types”
Set the quantity to the total number of tickets that will be eligible for a discount, over the lifetime of this discount
When a ticket buyer selects any 4 or more tickets, a 5% discount will be applied to each of the tickets selected.
Looking to offer bundles such as Tables or Groups?
You can bundle together multiple tickets or ticket types into bundle deals at specific prices using a packaged ticket
There are many ways to set up automatic discounts using these triggers and all combinations can’t be covered in a single guide.
Try testing your discounts out by clicking preview/view in the top right and going through the customer journey.
Remember the key points of what is triggering a discount and that discounts apply per ticket
Rather than trying to overcomplicate take a step back and see if you can simplify your discounts.
For example, offering multiple, 'cascading' automatic discounts across different ticket types may equate to the same savings as a single 10% discount on an entire order, regardless of the ticket types selected.
It's easier and simpler for you to promote and for buyers to understand a single discount.
How to create a discount code that applies to multiple events
You can create a global discount code that can be used across multiple, or all of your events which is great for offering membership discounts or discounts across an event series.
Select promote via the top menu bar
Click global discount codes
Create your code and select the event(s) you wish this code to apply for
Selecting all events will mean your code applies to all existing and future events.
Both quantity and maximum use per order are applied on the ticket level.
How to create multiple discount codes by uploading a CSV
This is particularly useful when creating a unique discount code for each person.
For example, you could use a unique Member ID or an email address as a code name
Head to the promote > discounts codes page on your event
Click create discount code / add code > select CSV upload
Download the template CSV file and copy your unique discount codes > save
One row = one discount codeUpload the CSV file
Set up the discount amount as directed in the steps above
Your discount will apply to each code that is uploaded
If you need to upload discount codes of different values you will need to create separate CSV files and upload them separately with the appropriate discount settings.
How do ticket buyers apply their discount code during checkout?
There are two ways to apply discount codes for ticket buyers:
Enter a discount code manually during checkout
Buyers can use the discount code field that will appear above their ticket selection or ticket information pages to manually enter and apply their discount code
Note: The discount will apply when a ticket is added to a buyer's cart'
Use the unique companion link to automatically apply a discount
Buyers can be given a unique link that directs them to the event page AND auto-applies the discount code. They do not need to manually enter their discount code.
Find your discount code on the discount codes page
Copy the link next to your discount
Share this link with your guests
How to track how many times a discount code has been used
Select your event via the events tab
Head to reports > discounts on the left-hand menu
This page shows you the overall usage of each discount code
Download this report to see individual orders that have used discount codes
Commonly asked questions
If a buyer uses a 100% off discount code will we still have to pay booking fees?
Booking fees are only charged on paid tickets. If a 100% discount is applied, this means the ticket price is $0. This ticket is now 'free' so booking fees will not be charged.
