How to accept Gift Aid on donations

Updated over a month ago

If you're a UK-based charity, you may want to accept Gift Aid on your donations. We've made it simple to claim and report on Gift Aid if you're running a charity event and claiming Gift Aid on donations.

Humanitix cannot provide any advice about how to claim Gift Aid. We recommend speaking to a financial advisor for any specific advice on your charity.

You can accept GiftAid in 3 short steps on Humanitix

  1. Add a donation option to your event page

  2. Collect a Gift Aid declaration using a checkout question

  3. Download a report of your donations and Gift Aid declarations from your orders report

1. Add a donation option

In addition to ticket types you can add a donation option that buyers can add to their order.

  1. Manage your event

  2. Head to the tickets > ticket types page

  3. Click + donation beneath your ticket type(s)

  4. Enter the charity name into the donation field e.g. "Donate to XYZ"

Buyers by default will be able to choose any amount but you can also set a list of amounts for them to choose from using the donation settings ⚙️

2. Collect a Gift Aid declaration and buyer address

You can collect a Gift Aid declaration and required details from the buyer during the checkout process with checkout questions.

Gift Aid declaration

  1. Navigate to checkout questions

  2. Click + add question

  3. Select checkbox

  4. In the question name enter "I want to add Gift Aid to my donation"

  5. Apply the question to order

  6. Click the settings ⚙️ and copy+paste the template declaration text (found below) into the description. Make any edits you need including the charity name.

Please note the description field is plain text and cannot be formatted.

Gift Aid declaration template text

-- CHECK ONLY IF YOU HAVE MADE A DONATION ---

I want to Gift Aid my donation to [Charity Name].

I am a UK taxpayer and understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax in the current tax year than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations it is my responsibility to pay any difference.

I will notify the charity if:

- I want to cancel this declaration

- I change my name or home address

- I no longer pay sufficient tax on my income and/or capital gains

If I pay Income Tax at the higher or additional rate and want to receive the additional tax relief due to me, I must include all my Gift Aid donations on my Self-Assessment tax return or ask HM Revenue and Customs to adjust my tax code.

Buyer address

  1. Click +add question

  2. Select the address template question

  3. Apply the question to order and toggle on required

  4. Click the settings ⚙️ and toggle ON show if

  5. Select the Gift Aid question and "Answer" = 'True'

This question will now only appear when someone has opted-in to add Gift Aid to their donation.

3. Download 'Gift Aid' details from your orders report

You can download a copy of your orders report to see which orders with a donation have added Gift Aid.

  1. Navigate to reports > orders on the top menu bar

  2. Select your event(s) or leave blank for all orders

  3. Choose order status = donations
