Add sales tax or custom tax, and tax details for USD events

Updated this week

For events running in USD, Humanitix may be required to automatically calculate and remit sales tax on your event depending on your event's location.

In these states, the sales tax settings will be overridden.

You can however apply custom tax settings if required.

Event hosts are responsible for all compliance and tax obligations in areas where the event is taking place. Humanitix cannot give tax advice.

If you are unsure of your tax obligations please consult a tax professional. For specific state guidance, contact your state's tax authority directly: State Contact Information

How to collect sales tax and custom tax on your event

  1. Manage your event via the events tab

  2. Select payments and fees > settings

  3. Under the tax information tab select yes to turn on sales tax and/or custom tax

  4. Enter your business name, registration ID, and address

  5. Choose whether to:

    1. Pass on tax: Tax rate is added onto the ticket type price and is covered by the attendee.

    2. Absorb tax: Tax rate is included in your ticket price

If you’re passing on tax you can show the ticket price before tax. Head to advanced > settings on the left-hand menu bar.

No option to toggle sales on/off

If you do not have the option to choose yes or no to whether your event is subject to sales tax, it is because your event is in a state Humanitix is required to calculate and remit sales tax.

How to show ticket prices exclusive of tax

If your event is subject to tax and you are passing on tax you can show the ticket price before tax on the event page. By default, ticket prices will be shown to buyers inclusive of any tax.

A breakdown of the ticket cost including tax and booking fees will be available to the buyer in their order total during checkout.

Navigate to advanced > settings on the left-hand menu bar and toggle ON show prices before sales tax.

Where can I find a tax breakdown in my reporting?

You can see the total amount of tax collected on an event by looking at overview page while managing your event. Refer to the tax rate column.

You can see the tax calculated on each order via the orders report which is a granular report of all transactions on your event.

  1. Filter by the event name

  2. Click Get report and find the “Taxes” column

This report can be exported as a CSV file.

My event is exempt from sales tax

If you believe your event is exempt from sales tax either due to the nature of your event, items being sold, or your organisations tax exempt status then you can apply for tax exemption.

Contact the Humanitix support via the messenger after logging in or email us at [email protected].

You will be required to provide evidence of tax exemption.

What is sales tax? (USD events)

Sales tax is a consumption tax. Buyers pay for sales tax at the point of purchase and businesses remit sales tax collected to the relevant state tax authority.

Local and municipal governments may charge their own sales tax and may give the state permission to collect their “state-collected sales tax.”

Sales tax in the USA is governed at the state level and can vary dramatically between states. Most states require the seller to have a current license or permit.

Some states may require Humanitix (marketplace facilitator) to collect and remit sales tax.
> States where Humanitix is required to remit Sales tax

Whereas other states may require the event host (seller) to collect and remit sales tax. In certain states, local taxes are not included within Marketplace Facilitator Legislation. Humanitix is NOT responsible for any taxes that are NOT defined as “state-collected sales tax.”

What is Custom tax? (USD events)

Custom tax is used for calculating any tax that is not a “state-collected sales tax” and/or any Excise Tax required in your events' jurisdiction.

Excise Taxes are imposed on certain goods, services, and activities. Businesses may be required to pay ‘special other taxes’ directly to a municipal government.

This Custom Tax feature helps event hosts track tax items that may be unique to the event and/or location. Some states or cities charge an Excise Tax called ‘Admission Tax’ or ‘Amusement Tax’ through a Miscellaneous Tax Department that is separate from the Sales & Use Tax Department.

If the Custom Tax is due to any department outside of the Sales & Use Tax Department, Humanitix will never remit this tax.

The event host (seller) may pass this type of Custom Tax onto the buyer through higher prices. The Custom Tax will be included in the event hosts' payouts.

The event host is responsible for determining the tax rate for and paying the Custom Tax directly to the appropriate tax department.
